Come And Watch The Hills Turn Green.

Posted on April 28 2024

This will be short, there's just not much worth talking about.

The weather - It didn't snow! Temp on the porch this morning started at 33. The sun quickly took it up to 60. From there, things went down hill. Clouds rolled in, the "warm" southern wind had all the flags out straight as the temp went from 60 down to 50 during prime hatching time. By 5:00 o'clock everything was shut down, boats were being rowed to the take outs and we were headed to the Lordville Estate.

The  bugs - Never happened where we were. Yes there was the occasional Hendrickson and some paraleps hugging the windward bank, but mid- river there was nothing but drift boats, very few of which had people casting.

The water levels - Are now ideal for both drifting and wading.

The fishing - Not what we hoped for or expected. The hatches were sparse at best. The wade fishermen were virtually non-existent, the drift boats were numerous but created no problems. The wind was fierce in some places but there were plenty of places to fish that were protected from the wind. The main problem was the lack of bugs willing to brave the elements and do their part in getting fish to rise.

The outlook - If the forecast is to be believed, good things are coming this week. Highs in the seventies and nighttime lows in the fifties are predicted, with modest winds. There should be bugs hatching and spinners falling all week. The streams are now all wade able. Spread out and enjoy the coming of spring, there are fish everywhere from the dams to Callicoon just waiting to eat your fly.

Yesterday was the best fishing I’ve had on the Deleware in two years. I fished the BK and hit a caddis hatch around noon then went to the WB where I hit a fair Hendrickson hatch. By 4pm it was all over. I caught double digit amount of fish. The biggest was 16in brown. The rest were from 12-14in range.
Trying to work things out to get back down Tuesday.
    Good luck to all !!!!!!!!

Spent the weekend on the upper EB. Friday was exciting, 2-5 Hendrickson and blue quill everywhere. Landed 2 nice browns and snapped off a hefty one (all on Hendrickson). Saturday, not so thrilling. Wind was relentless. Found 1 brown in the morning on a caddis pupae, 1 in the rain (and wind) about 4 on a blue quill, and snapped another big brown off (figured out my tippet had reached its expiration date). Beats doin laundry.

Hi. A119 had a quick question: when do the evening hatches tend to get going and is it air and water temperature dependent?

Yesterday was interesting!!! I was on the BK looking for rises when two pro fly fishermen showed up. A fish rose and I was directed to try for the fish. I was a nervous wreck. Of course the fish didn’t take my fly then BUT after they left and pressure was off I landed 2fish a 16 in rainbow and a12 in rainbow. 3 refusals. All on caddis. At 2:30 left for the WB. I saw 4 rises and lost a fish at the net.
    I left at 5:00.
For me this was a good day. I will do the same tomorrow

Sorry for the repost I posted this under the wrong day prior. Made a quick trip up this afternoon and fished the BE this afternoon. Not a ton of bugs but fish were up eating. Caught a 14 inch rainbow on an apple caddis around 2pm ish. started getting windier and chilly so walked back upstream towards the car. Decided to take a quick walk upstream and after 10 minutes of staring at the water noticed a much larger fish rising. Hooked 2 more BIG fish on apple caddis and both broke me off. Was the first time out this season and bugs are little early. I’ll be backup 3 days next week floating just me and the dog.
