Bright sunshine and low water levels, even with the windmills all facing north, is not a good thing if you are a week away from the longest day of the year. While the air temp remained in the low seventies, the sun raised the freestone temps into the no-fish zone on both the BK and the BE. Only the BR down to Lordville survived and it too will succumb to the sun's rays in the coming week. The fishing has been reduced to the WB and the UEB and the BR down to Stockport, probably for the rest of the summer.
What's that mean? For sure, those that are still fishing should bathe more often, and be sure to apply deodorant, (yes it will be more crowded). But there are still almost thirty-five miles of stream, and a cold front with much needed rain could still increase that number dramatically.
What to do? Use your best manners, last time I checked no one had the right to reserve their "spot", if someone beat you to it, go somewhere else. Don't ever throw at someone else's fish. If your floating continue to be respectful of wade anglers. If you are wading, try to help the drifters out, (they are homeless after all and need to find a way to both fish and make it to the take out without incurring the wrath of every one else on the river.
Where to fish? Yesterday, I started out in the upper third of the WB and had sulfurs and rising fish, when the sulfurs quit, so did I, moved down to the middle section and found fish eating iso's, when boats and wade fishermen became a distraction, I went down to the bottom third and found the summer sulfurs, olives, (both big and small), isos, cahills and spinners of all of the above on the water.
How's the fishing? It was a challenging week. I was able to find rising fish almost all of the time I was on the water, they weren't always easy to catch, but a lot of quality fish ended up in the bottom of the net. I left at least five flies in the mouths of hot rainbows, (one was a surgical decision), and took but one extra fly out of a fish's mouth. Either I need to quit fishing 6x, or people need to hook more fish.
If you're going to be fishing this coming week, bring suntan lotion and drink lots of water.
Thanks for the report. I will stay off of the water for the next few days. Hopefully the fish get a brake. I have been seeing too many fish with hook marks on their lips. It kind of disappoints me. I know, it comes with the territory.
Good advice A119. I’ll be there tomorrow for sure!!!
Thanks for the report
