Finally have something a little different to talk about. Started out at 3:00 with a place I was intending to fish clearly in mind. Pulled into the parking area and there was a guy with his waders on fussing with his equipment in the back of his vehicle. Asked him if he was coming or going? Said he was done, and that he had done very well with the rainbows on little olives and big isos. Told him he beat me to it by a few hours and headed for another spot.
When I got streamside I was treated to the sight of isos in the air and rising fish. Not a lot of isos but enough that you could mark a rising fish, move close enough to make a cast and wait until he rose again before casting. Again, no yearlings, just big fish. Lost three of the first four I hooked, then landed five in a row before losing the last fish. Was back to the car just before six.
Last evening I saw lots of bugs but almost no rising fish. Tonight I found a place where there were plenty of both bugs and rising fish. Most of the fish were 11/12 inches long and a good number of them were the missing 1.5 year old rainbows I've been blathering about. There were fish eating olives all over the river and they weren't looking very closely to see if the olives had hooks in 'em. Only hooked one good fish and he came unstuck with backing running off the reel.
Either the afternoon or the evening fishing would have been a good day but the combo made it my best day since back on August 22nd.
Note to music aficionados - Love Freddy Cannon, (when he's in Syracuse he goes to Suburban Park), but, you jumped the gun. If you want someone to tell, (show), you where it's at, better ask the Dave Clark Five, (I Like It Like That).A
Ed and Jim sounds like a nice day on the river. Ed I’ve been on that. bench so much lately I have slivers in my butt!!! A119 thanks for the report.
After a very quiet AM on the lower WB I had some better luck after hanging out with Ed Smith at the Gamelands. Very nice olive hatch from 5 till dark. Had one take Ed’s Sulphur emerger that he handed out at the Editors meeting last month. I think that trout forgot it is September. Then got a few more on a #20 parachute olive.
Sure wish I could find that ISO hatch or a place with even modest morning action soon!
I’m still lost on all of those musicians…last one I got was Meat Loaf.
Jim D Your are still “the man”I don’t even know who Chris Kenner is. Kudos. I’m jealous. Ed
Ironically when you posted that blog I was listening to and watching DC5 perform “Bits and Pieces” ..one of my favorite DC5 recordings…You are correct the DC 5 recorded that cover in 1965..Chris Kenner wrote and recorded that version in 1961 in the heyday of great song writing…I favor the DC5 version! We need rain for the freestones and I am concerned we have lost a lot of insect population due to exposure of the streambed..next year will tell us if we are correct.
But by sitting on the bench and not getting up to bat,I was hittless(bad pun) Had a wonderful afternoon fishing and chatting with Jim N at the upper gamelands.I was fishless( as well as hitless) Hit the Willow , which is extremely low , in the evening . Landed a nice 16” brown on a #22 ant and a 10”er. A fun day. Ed
Angler119- Thank You. I feel redeemed. I was thinking DC5, but figured I was off target. Jim D is still the guru, sometimes I get lucky.Ed
