If You Have Deer In Your Yard, You Don't Need A Rake.

Posted on October 19 2024

Woke this morning to find the backyard covered with frost. Thermometer on the back porch read 30. Waited until 10:30 to resume the peach tree pruning saga. Happy to report that tree #3 is now finished. Will go back and "touch up" trees one and two, now that I have viewed several peach tree pruning videos. Thankfully, I have lots of helpers on the project. The peach leaves are still green but lots of them come loose during the pruning process. Yesterday six deer helped clean up and today the number swelled to nine. There won't be a peach leaf left in the yard tomorrow morning

Skipped the lower WB and it's "green tinted" water and arrived at a pool on the EB higher up than I've been fishing, promptly at 3:00. Maybe a tad early, but there were some bugs and I saw a couple fish rise before my phone rang, it was a return call from a "How'd you do?" call I'd made earlier. While I was talking, I saw four more fish rise. Waded in, got in position to cast to two of the risers, and never saw another rise. The bugs didn't get going, (at least while I was there), and at 4:00, was well on my way back to the area where I have enjoyed both bugs and rising fish for the past two weeks. (Please understand that nothing I have said is worthy of italics, the newly acquired lap top is no doubt showing me who is boss, and it's not worth me trying to figure it out how to fix it. If the grammarian feels the urge to return things to the normal type, he should feel free to do so).

The rest of the story - Down on the lower portion of the EB, both bugs and fish were doing their thing, and  from about 4:15 until about 5:30 I was the recipient of  the fish's desire to eat everything that floated by. When the sun went behind the hill and things came to a halt, I scooted over to junction pool and  threw at rising fish until 6:30, got two refusals, caught one fall fish, froze my keister, and will once again have a piece of humble pie for desert.

Note - Clicked  on the I at the top of the page, and  now, even I know how to stop writing in italics.

Angler119-Sounds like a tough day. Unfortunately the trout season is coming to a close with colder weather and shorter days. Did you hook any trout on the lower EB? Another question- what color dubbing do you use for your ISO duns. I use a blend of Marron /brown and some gray but I noticed the bellies of the ISOs I picked up on the WB looked more grayish olive?? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Ed

I’m convinced keyboards, computers and all have moods just like people. And the fish. Sometimes worse.

I was at fish’s eddy. walked upstream to find posted signs everywhere, ex no trespassing beyond this point right down by the water. The name was Mandaglio. I wanted to wade up to the top of riff but was not sure. As long as I stay in the water or within the high water mark is it ok to work my way up to the bridge.? By 4:00 there were hebe’s, olives, cahills and flyying ants on the water. Sparse but consistent. in the lower flat I found it very difficult to get close enough and then when I did hook up it was a fall fish. Thank you!!!

Maybe the title is a parody of the book “If you give a mouse a cookie”?

Saw a huge 8-10 point buck in my back yard this morning….the ladies all scattered pretty quickly!

Fishing is heading towards its close I guess. I’m dreading daylight savings for sure. Fish on A119!!

Today’s blog title sounds like it could be lyrics from a David Allen Coe song..just kidding. This time of year is both wonderful and a little depressing at the same time..knowing what is just around the corner weather wise. Thank the trout gods for fly tying and assorted chores for fly fishing maintenance in the off season . Be safe wading..as a perceived wet rock on approach could be ice. Love the blog..
