I've got the summertime (pre sulfurs ) blues.

Posted on June 07 2021

Left home about 6:00 this morning so that I could get in a couple of hours of fishing before things heated up. Was on the EB (water temp 65) by 8:15 and had rising trout shortly thereafter. Problem was they weren't rising to my fly. They were eating pseudo spinners.  My smallest spinners are at least 2x's as big as the pseudos and the trout let me know they did not pass muster. By 10:30 it was over and I headed for camp to cut the lawn and thin the peaches.

Drove into town this afternoon to get my signature notarized at the bank only to find out that they didn't have a Notary Public. Two smiling tellers sent me to the Town Clerk  where they had a notary. Got my signature notarized and got a new dump sticker (free to those of us over 65). Then, foolishly, decided to drive up to Deposit to see what was hatching. As far as I could see the only things on the water were drift boats and the fish were happy to let them pass by.

Drove down to a run below Balls Eddy and at about 4:30, with good cloud cover and an occasional rumble of thunder, decided to fish.  In two hours of bugless fishing I rose four fish, three of which refused to eat. Four drift boats went by giving me plenty of room, not that it mattered. About 7:00 I decided to sit down and wait for it to happen. Didn't have to wait more than ten minutes and "it happened".  Four pontoon boats came down river and anchored about 100 feet apart right where I was planning on doing my evening fishing.  They didn't do anything wrong, I was sitting down, not fishing, it's just frustrating.

Got over my frustration when I drove downstream and fished on the side of an island opposite where the boats go by.  Sat on the bank again and waited for it to happen.  It did but not until almost 8:30. Then bugs came and fish ate. Landed two very nice fish and broke off another (not the tippet's fault, mine).

With the heat wave expected to be with us until Friday, the fishing will be early mornings and just before dark (got to the car at 9:22). If you come you will need to find something else to do from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM.  Me?  I still have to finish thinning the peaches.
