Now is the time.

Expecting sunshine to warm the water and provide us with a hatch of bugs or a spinner fall, we parked at the upper gamelands (two cars there before us) and walked down the path to the river. If you're wearing felts, it's like trying to walk on a teflon coated
slope covered with six inches of chocolate pudding.

Arrived streamside covered with mud only to find that the sun had once again failed to make its way through the clouds. There were almost no bugs and a corresponding number of risers. Blind casted spinners and found enough hungry fish to make it a worthwhile venture. By the time we were ready to head for the car (2:00) there were some bugs hatching and the fish were no longer interested in our spinners. Arrived at the parking lot (nine cars there) again covered with mud. The car will probably never be the same.

Had lunch, mowed the lawn and set out for the evening fishing. Opted for a spot on the EB that has been too high to fish until this past week. There were an assortment of the big bugs on the water (no drakes) and there were some fish feeding on them. Had enough eager eaters to make the last three hours of the day beat the heck out of mowing the lawn.

If you choose to fish the river system this weekend, you should (absent one of those bright sunshine, high pressure, windy type days) be able to find a hatch of "big bugs" with feeding fish and dragonflies doing their best to reduce their numbers.

It's the time of year when you should spend a couple days not crossing items off the to do list. Go fishing.

I was on the east branch at parking spot by fishes eddy right above the towns building. Tons of bugs and risers, out of casting distance but there. Then the 2 merganzers began herding and they stopped. After a few minutes they started rising, the 2 merganzers did their thing and the trout stopped again. This continued for a few hours. I wonder if the trout population which ppl say is down on that river or have the trout learned not to be near the surface when those damn ducks are there.
