Once around the sun with Covid - 19.

Posted on March 19 2021

Last year at this time my wife and I were driving up I-95, heading for home.  The country was shut down and the interstates were empty but for snow birds, with Quebec license plates, trying to get back into Canada before it's borders were closed.

A year later things have changed.  Jean and I have both gotten our two shots of Pfizer's vaccine, as have a substantial percentage of those over 65.  With the most vulnerable portion of the population now protected the death rate should decline.  Make no mistake, the virus is still with us and will be for the foreseeable future.  We all now know how to best protect ourselves from the virus. If people follow the CDC mandates (wear a mask, social distance and wash hands) until the vaccines provide us with herd immunity,  next year at this time may truly be a return to normal.

Had to pull the plug on the bonefish trip last spring and was within a day or two of doing the same this year.  Got my second shot on March 14 which has given me the two weeks required for full immunity before my flight to Deadman's Cay. If I can get a negative covid test result back in time to apply for and receive a Bahamas health visa I'll be on the plane.  If not, I'll be on the road north.

The fishing - The reservoirs will likely be spilling sometime in the next week and fishermen will no doubt be floating the river throwing alewife patterns at hungry trout.  Being a dry fly guy, my time is probably still several weeks away but it doesn't  keep me from hoping. Can't seem to forget that last year, on April 4th, I stood in junction pool and landed a dozen fish on dries, you just never know.

If you get to go, catch a couple for me!!!

    I just read your book.
Last year, looking for a COVID isolation pastime, I decided it would be fly fishing the Delaware. Your blog MARKEDLY enhanced my experience. I would have been lost wandering around on my own.
Your book brought back that enjoyment and, like always, I picked up incredibly more knowledge reading your experiences a second time having a little more familiarity with the river system.
    Well done! Thank you!
