So, I drove down to the fishing camp this morning, no, not to fish, that was never a possibility. I went to mow the grass, level the concrete floor on the porch before the new carpet arrives, fill the bird feeders and put the primer coat on the new screen door. Arrived about 10:00 and at 2:15 I was on the road heading back home.
There were but a modest number of boats to be seen both on the way down and on the way home. At about 2:30 I counted five cars parked beside the cabins at WBA and but one at DRC. Ran into a bunch of caddis on Rte. 17 at the game lands and saw three pontoon boats below the Rte. 17 bridge in Deposit.
What to do? Stay home and watch the USGS stream flow reports. My maximum cfs levels for wade fishing the river system (I'm old but I know the rivers reasonably well) are as follows: WB there are a few places where I can wade at 2,000 cfs, EB several places can be waded again at 2,000 cfs, UEB 1,000 cfs is my cut off point, the BR I can fish in a couple of places at about 3,500 cfs and the BK can be fished by me at around 750 cfs. This is not to suggest that anyone try wade fishing at these levels but rather to show just how far above safe wading levels current flows are.
As I write this, it's raining, not hard but the forecast calls for over an inch of rain this weekend. If the flows start up again I'm giving serious consideration to heading down I-81 to fish the South Holston for a few days. They have had good wading releases lately and catching a bunch of the river's small but beautifully colored brown trout is just plain fun.
Thanks so much for all the great writing and info on the Delaware system! Three questions:
1 – For the morning late spring “hatches” is he usual fly a rusty spinner?
2 – what time do those spinner falls usually get going in the morning? Really early like 6 or 7 or more like 9 or 10?
3 – In reading the blog for a few years it seems you move around to different rivers a lot. What is your process on when to stop at a particular spot but also when to leave and go to a totally different river rather than wait and be patient until the hatch “turns on” so to speak?
Again, thanks for all the help!!
