May was wonderful this season compared to last with much clearer skies and only a handful of days with thunder and lightning. Only one or two days of the month were bad enough to sit them out. Our guests did fish on those days, just a bit closer to home than usual. Overall the temps were steady between 80 and 85 degrees with quite a few super nice days mixed with just a couple that were less than desirable. No serious winds this month made for some stellar fishing for tailing bones in the mornings.
The month started with Rick Grassett bringing together a wonderful group of well traveled fisherman. Jon Yenari, Kirk Grassett and Norm and Francie Boardman all had a wonderful time while fishing with us at Andros South. At the same time we were joined by John and Paul Gaynor who came all the way from the UK to join us for some great bonefishing action. Next in was Scott Rogers and his “Creel Gang” from the Knoxville, Tennessee area. Needless to say these guys know how to have a great time and they catch a few fish at the same time. Guys like Dan and Chad Montgomery, Peter Petruzzi, Scott Rogers himself and Brad and Shelby Bufkin tore it up this week on the water and at the “Slack Tide”.
Once we made it through the Creel gang we were onto Andrew Bennett’s FIBFest (FishingIndustryBloggersFest). This week may become an annual thing if Andrew has anything to do with it, which he does! What a great time with some very good people. Names like Kirk Deeter, Bruce Smithhammer,Michael White, Louis Cahill, Pete McDonald, Michael Gracie and Sam and Johnny Spillane made this an all star cast that would be tough to put together for any venue, let alone a fishing lodge, but we did it!
The fishing was epic more than a time or two and even when it was tough at times it was still productive. Quite a few bonefish in the 5-9lb range were landed this month along with lots of smaller fish. Johnny Spillane landed a nice fish right in the marina near the lodge while blind casting a huge pink and chartreuse deceiver. Not a surprise, but Michael White counted poundage rather than numbers of fish on his trip. He landed a 9lb fish one day and then multiple fish between 5 and 8lbs in an afternoon. Not bad at all and a great way to bring our season to an end. Thanks to all who joined us – we look forward to seeing you next time.
