When you’re wading for bonefish at Andros South or anywhere else they swim, you’re going to have some days with no clouds and some days with no sun, but most days are a mix of the two. The sun comes out and you get great visibility; a cloud comes by and the lights go out.
Unless it’s so calm that you can see wakes or tails, it doesn’t make much sense to walk when you’re under a cloud and the lights are out. Walk slowly and scan for fish when you’ve got good light. When a cloud passes overhead, just stop and wait for good light.
Why? If you can’t see and you keep walking,
- you’re covering ground that could hold bonefish, and that’s a waste, and
- you might walk right into a fish, spooking him and all the others around him.
If you’ve got solid cloud cover you’ve got no choice – you need to just walk slowly and do your best. If you’ve got a mix of sun and clouds, when that cloud comes overhead, just stop and relax, mon! Take a breather, take in the flats and start stalking again when you can see.
