As lake trout have taken over Yellowstone Lake, causing the population of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout to plummet an estimated 90 percent, grizzly bears that have historically depended on the cutthroats for food are looking elsewhere. New research published in The Proceedings of the Royal Society B finds that elk calf deaths by grizzlies are up 12 to 41 percent since the 1980s due to loss of their natural food source.
