The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one of the more remarkable areas of the world, and wraps itself around some of the finest saltwater fly fishing there is, particularly for permit. Since no new access roads are allowed there, the long bumpy ride to Punta Allen from its northern edge, or to Punta Herrero from its southern edge, promise to keep the place relatively unspoiled. Acension Bay is surrounded by the Reserve and is at the center of several destination fishing operations, including the well-known Casa Blanca on its souther edge, the smaller camps around Punta Allen, and Boca Paila just north. This piece from the Christian Science Monitor describes the Biosphere in more detail.
