With yesterday being cloudy and the nighttime temps dropping into the low 60's the upper BR was once again available for early morning fishing. Last weeks morning fishing was very good and I was looking forward to taking up where I left off.
The bugs? - There weren't any (actually I saw zero tricos and three olives).

In over thirty years of fishing the Delaware I've never seen bugs behave the way they have this year. Hendricksons wouldn't end and the drakes wouldn't start and when they finally did get going the went almost into July. The Tricos should be on both branches by now but the only fishable hatch I've seen was on the big river. The summer sulfurs are something you can usually depend on. Be in Deposit...

After yesterday's UE bonanza there was no question where I was going this am. There were two cars parked on the lower part of the river at trico spots and two fishermen in the pool I had fished yesterday. Played a triple header today. Early morning on the BR where Tricos were no shows and the olives made only a token appearance. Fish were looking up and most risers gave my fly at least a look. Neglected to say in yesterday's report that the Tricos I saw were on the BR. Today I started out on the lower WB and there were none. Tricos aren't overly fond of cold water and are only found in the lower portions of the UE and WB.

Back on the 6th of July I felt the need to downgrade the fishing to poor. At that time there were still dozens of boats on the water and wade fishermen everywhere. The big bug season had finally ended and the fish were badly beaten up. They rose infrequently, if at all and showed a reluctance to eat anything with a hook in it.

After the two very good days on Thursday and Friday I was anxious to get back to the river. The forecast calling for an all day rain with the temp in the 60's did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm. With the weatherman calling for three 90 degree days in a row and the water temp at Lordville 66 degrees I gave the BR one last shot. Fished part way up to Stockport where the temp read 64 on my arrival and 65.5 on my departure. There were a few olives and some spinners, I caught rainbows on both (two each). With the rain eliminating lawn watering responsibility what was I to do but go fishing. Tried the upper reaches of the BR that was, with the aid of the thermal release, in the low 60s on the PA side. Fished with a spinner, iso and steno for an hour without seeing a rise. Saw an olive float down the river and then a couple in the air. Put one on and was immediately into fish. Went out early this morning in search of Tricos. I found some. Not nearly enough to interest the fish but it shouldn't be long. They sent another thermal release down the WB and after the last time I wasn't going to be suckered into waiting for the bugs to hatch and fish to feed.

If anyone wants to fish the Upper East in total solitude the time is now. Except for the two cars parked in the Thayer Hollow pull off (perhaps a tryst) there was no one on the river. Returned to camp this afternoon primarily to water the new grass. At 7:30, with everything watered down, I decided to see if I could find a few rising fish. With a four day weekend coming up I thought that the early part of the week would be quiet. Was I ever wrong. There was an unending string of drift boats, kayaks, pontoon boats and every other imaginable kind of personal floatation device on the WB Tuesday. Every pool on the UE had multiple fishermen in it. Had numerous items on Mondays "To do" list and didn't leave town 'til after one. Unloaded the perishables at camp and went for a drive around the river system. Today was a scorcher, the third bright, sunny, hot day in a row. Went out into the Lordville Riff early hoping to catch my first decent fish from the riff this year. I did. It wasn't great. There were no hatching bugs but there were quite a few very small spinners on the water. Yearling trout along the shore were feeding on them. Hooked four good fish on an assortment of flies, landed three.

As the proud new owner of 8 cubic yards of topsoil, I felt duty bound to begin the process of filling in holes and leveling out some of the yards numerous dips and valleys. Knew it was going to be hot so I started early, by 10:30 I was soaking wet and tired enough to call it quits for the day.

Just so you know - both reservoirs are now spilling. The forecasts vary but there is sure to be more rain tomorrow. Fished both branches in rising water today. Neither branch should be waded at present levels unless you are familiar with the pool you are fishing and are a good wader. If we get the predicted amount of rain it will be a boats only situation again.

After fishing the lower portion of the UE in what one would call a modest drake hatch yesterday, I returned today expecting the hatch would build and encompass the prime drake area around Long Flat. After fishing for the last six days straight I am at a loss to explain where the big bugs (isos, green drakes and brown drakes) are. I've been on the Big River, Big East, Beaverkill, West Branch and Upper East Branch. There have been iso husks on the rocks of the streams for the past two weeks. Saw one Green Drake spinner fall and one iso hatch on the BK. A handful of Green Drake duns and spinners...

Fourth straight day with high winds. When the wind blows like it did today, morning spinner falls are taken off the menu. Any meaningful dry fly fishing during the mid afternoon period has to be done in places protected by windward hills or steep banks. Often the duns molt on the screen and I get an opportunity to preview the coming spinner falls. As a general rule, rusty spinners in a variety of sizes will serve you well. Woke up this morning to find the BK was blown out and muddy. The EB and BR were rising rapidly and would both be too high and muddy to fish. Was I upset? Not in the least.
